1.After a few weeks’ experience, apprentice jewelers can usually begin to discriminate, though not with absolute certainty, genuine diamonds from imitation diamonds.
(A) genuine diamonds from imitation diamonds
(B) genuine diamonds apart from imitations
(C) between genuine diamonds and imitation diamonds
(D) among genuine diamonds and imitation diamondsC
(E) whether diamonds are imitation or genuine

词典里关于discriminate的用法就是discriminate A from B。比如:
The ability to think discriminates humans from other animals.

c答案...

1.After a few weeks’ experience, apprentice jewelers can usually begin to discriminate, though not with absolute certainty, genuine diamonds from imitation diamonds.
(A) genuine diamonds from imitation diamonds

(B) genuine diamonds apart from imitations
(C) between genuine diamonds and imitation diamonds
(D) among genuine diamonds and imitation diamondsC
(E) whether diamonds are imitation or genuine

discriminate between A and B
A答案如果是from imitation diamonds,就变成了geniune diamonds包含在imitation diamonds里面了。。

The idiom "distinguish between x and y" is used to describe 2 different things.
Eg: The blind cannot distinguish between the colour green and red.

The idiom "distinguish x from y" is used for 2 similar things.
Eg: Only experts can distinguish the original mona lisa from a fake one.
In our question, the 2 diamonds are similar items, so it is "distinguish x from y"
Please tell me... between is for similarity or what?

另外。。。

与compare ... with ...

discriminate from

How can he discriminate the real painting from the false one?
The boy is too young to discriminate good books from bad ones.
The two brothers are so much alike; it is difficult to discriminate one from the other.

discriminate between
You must learn to discriminate between facts and opinions.
He is the connoisseur who can discriminate between two equally fine wines.
A teacher must not discriminate between pupils.

其他discriminate 和distinguish 的有些类似了,当他们在与From连接构成词组的时候,需要区分的对象是属于同一类别的;如前面所举例的一样;
当用作discirminate between...and...
