It almost is a must that you have some sort of business background, such as the completion of some business courses or business-related internships or part-time jobs. It is difficult for an English major to apply for accounting or finance. Some universities don't require accounting background for master of accounting, but the fact is you need to provide evidence that you have some business background. As for finance, it's even harder. You not only need to have finished math and economics related courses but also had better have finance-related work experience (of course, if you want to enter top 50 business schools). You might try to find some internships or part-time jobs to strengthen your background.
