请问这个an observation是用来解释前面的patent的对吧？ 以我初浅的语法知识感觉，这是属于同位语吗？ 我这个an observation有点突兀，如果不通过语意理解，很难知道它到底是只得什么，以及“an observation about electric current first made in 1845 and now included in virtually every textbook of elementary physics”这整个句子出现的作用到底是来干嘛的。

这句话的背景应该是RS在试图改变专利申请系统，他在听证会上举例说他的一个同事，在如今的申请系统下，甚至可以申请到对KIRCHHOFF LAW的专利权。对KIRCHHOFF不了解的人，肯定会问这个例子能说明如今的申请系统有什么问题呢？后面an observation对KIRCHHOFF LAW的描述，就是在解释说KIRCHHOFF LAW是啥，并且说明这个LAW已经存在很久（已经涵盖在所有物理教科书中），以此来表达他同事能申请下对它的专利权的可笑之处，进而说明当下专利申请系统的缺陷。

这属于啥句型结构啊，一个逗号隔开之后，后面跟一个句子。

不是一个逗号后面跟一个句子，而是“逗号+abstract noun+clause"

一个词可以作同位语，一个词+that引导来解释这个抽象名词的从句，整体还是可以作为同位语, 来概况前句要表述的概念
