答案是E。楼主选了A，A中答案的解释是：where在定语从句中本应做地点状语，但是visit是及物动词，需要跟宾语，所以where引导的从句存在矛盾。这句话楼主完全不知所云啊，这是一个什么语法点，有没有大神解释一下啊

先行词在定语从句中做什么成分决定了这是什么类型的定语从句，例如本题中，把从句补全就是 they had visited (the princely states). 所以先行词state 在从句中作宾语，故用that、which...来引导，而不能用where。

使用where的定语从句举个例子：
That’s the hotel where we were staying last summer. 从句补全就是we were staying (at the hotel) last summer. 此处at the hotel作地点状语，所以前面用where

呃 楼主你概念有点混淆啊。定语从句和宾语从句不一样，取决于从句在主句中做的成分。

where可以引导宾语从句，但是不能引导先行词在从句中作宾语成分的定语从句。（好绕－ －）

是有点绕不过来，这块是我的薄弱项从高中就没学好············也就是说句子中试图用where指代前面的宾语但是where是关系副词不是代词所以不能指代，要用that，which这些对吗

哈哈反正我今天上午任务完成了给楼主好好补一下：P

从句根据在主句中做的成分不同有不同的类型，所以首先第一步就是分析主句，观察从句做的成分
1/如果主句中从句做的是主语，就是主语从句。Who will be our monitor hasn't been decided yet.  Who引导的从句在主句中担任主语。
2/同样，如果从句担任主句中的宾语、表语、状语、同位语，则分别是宾语从句、表语从句、状语从句、同位语从句...用where举个宾语从句的例子。He didn’t tell where we should meet again.
3/如果从句在主句中是用来修饰某个名词（先行词）的，则是定语从句。如本题，从句修饰states，所以是做定语成分。

确定从句在主句中做的成分后，我们再看从句的成分来确定使用关系代词还是关系副词。
1/先说定语从句。
1.1/本题中，they had visited ____.   =>缺宾语，所以用关系代词 that which who等等
1.2/如果缺的是状语，比如，they stayed a whole week ____.  =>主谓宾不缺，缺状语，they stayed a whole week (at the states). 则要用关系副词where，即 the states where they stayed a whole week.
2/名词性从句也是一样，看从句成分。以主语从句为例。
2.1/上面举的主语从句的例子：____ will be our monitor  =>缺主语，用连接代词who （注意，这里不叫关系代词了）
2.2/再比如，Where they stayed a whole week is a good place.    “they stayed a whole week”不缺主谓宾，缺状语，所以用连接副词。2.3/名词性从句还有一个从属连词，that和whether，和上两种不同也是因为它在从句中做的成分与上面不同。在从句中不担成分。

所以其实就是两部分，主句成分与从句成分，搞清楚就好了。

应该还有很多特殊的从句类型，我这里只是大概讲了一下，有遗漏欢迎指正。

a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that bring back the chaise lounge,the overstuffed sofa,and the claw-footed bathtub

这两个句子中that引导的从句修饰有什么不同啊
