Leaders are created by the demandsthat are placed on them.      

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to whichyou agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for theposition you take. In developing and supporting your position, you shouldconsider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explainhow these considerations shape your position.

Are the outstanding figures createdby the demands of era when they live? Those in favor believe that leaders arecreated by the external demands of their surroundings. Those opposed believethat these demands do not make great leaders - and might use inherent qualitiesof the individuals as explanatory factors. I believe that leaders are createdby not only by outer demands but also by their inherent characters.

Leaders are created by the needsfrom their outer surroundings; different times call for different kinds ofleaderships. For example, Martin Luther King became the African-American CivilRights Movement leader during the time of extreme racial inequality. Mao Zedongfound the Red Army, and became head of the Communist Party of China during theChinese Civil War.

Those opposed to the argumentbelieve external demands do not make great leaders; it is inherent qualitiessuch as courage, benevolence, and strong will that create a great leader. As apreeminent leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi usedfasting as a nonviolent weapon to led India to independence. With fasts lastingup to 21 days, Gandhi is a man of strong will, and courage.  Clearly, Ghandi's leadership was directlytied to his inherent qualities instead of the context in which it occurred.

To summarize, leaders are borne outof a particular context, but only if they possess a certain set of leadershipqualities to begin with. Therefore, outer surrounding and inherent quality are equally important in creating a great leader.
