Starfish, with anywhere from five to eight arms, have a strong regenerative ability,and if one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal　overcompensating and growing an extra one or two.

表示不理解为什么D错，growing... 不可以做overcompensating的解释加强吗？

我也做错了这道题T T 。。然后我分析了一下， 大概是这样的思路：
我觉得，首先，Manhattan里讲 v-ing形式 可以修饰名词，动词和它的宾语，整个句子。但是用v-ing形式来修饰v-ing ，应该是不行的，非常的awkward，或者说是错误的。
其次，如果growing...用来解释overcompensating， 这个with结构是有问题的。也就是说，Starfish,..have a strong regenerative ability,and if one arm is lost it is quickly replaced,with the animal sometimes overcompensating,growing an extra one or two.不觉得compensating后面少了宾语吗。但如果是with the animal sometimes overcompensating and growing an extra one or two (arms).就是正确的了。

个人浅见，我觉得D错的主要原因还是在于they are qucikly replaced.

这里they 显然只能指代starfish， starfish are replaced 不和逻辑，应该是前面提到的 one arm is replaced 才对。所以这样看来D 就是不对的了
