语法上已经理解，doubling作伴随状语
但是语义上还是觉得有点问题
按照正确答案的思路，主语是the number of people，这样不应该翻译成  1990年坐头等舱的人数是1989年增加人数的两倍 ？

this sort of modifier should actually satisfy TWO requirements:

1) it should apply most nearly to the subject ; and, even more importantly

2) it should have one of the following RELATIONSHIPS to that clause:

   a) immediate consequence

   b) simultaneous, but lower-priority, action

The V-ing form is very flexible.

I. It can modify nouns directly (e.g., the changing seasons).

II. It can modify verbs and their subjects (e.g., I lifted the weight, whistling).

III.  It can even modify an entire clause as above, as long as the entire clause converted into a noun phrase could function as the subject ofthe verb that is now in V-ing form. This use of the V-ing form works best when you want to express the result of the main clause.

A项 doubling的做法，个人认为不是伴随，是直接结果
  上面两个来源部分，我已经用蓝色部分标出，Ving表示前面整句结果的用法，这样的表达其实并不少见，例如OG15 #81.
   此句的意思是：国内航线坐头等舱的人数量在1990年急剧增加，（这个事情的直接结果是）今年的增量是去年增量的两倍

你的意思我差不多理解了，就是今年人数增加这件事情 导致了doubling increase这件事
但语义似乎也不通，因为我纠结的是double的主语是什么。。。

1)语义上，应该是今年人数增长了，（因为这个增长—直接原因）导致了doubling increase
   
2）我认为没有直接主语，是前面整个句子的结果；
     就像很多题里面，如果涉及到v-ing的考点的话，很多错误选项会用which来指代前面整个句子的做主语。
