请教比较动词的省略问题....

一直对比较什么时候可以省略动词，什么时候不可以省略有些困惑，做题的时候也是凭感觉，没有明确思路，求大家指点！

eg. (Chasedream 句子改错上面的一道题，不知道其他出处)
According to New York Times' data, in 2012 New York became the first American city in which more foreigners bought the apartment (than that of patrials.)

a)  same.
b) than patrials were
c) than did patrials
d) than there had been patrials
e) than patrials

(os: e)
问题：为什么C不对，即 than patrials did buy, 虽然没有动词也不会产生歧义，但是不知道c是不是绝对错误还是只是不如e简洁？晕啊晕

建议别做非官方题，CE本质没区别。
