状语从句可以省略的前提有两个：1，从句的主语和主句的主语是同一个（或者是it），2 从句的谓语动词必须是be动词
这道题我试着解释一下C选项
appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although never sighted at
那么这个句子如果是符合省略要求的话，还原回来应该是 Sunspots appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although [Sunspots are] never sighted at....
但是在这里涉及到了一个主从句时态的问题，这里原题想要表达的是have never been sighted, 如果想要表达这层意思的话就必须把have been 写出来，省略原则之所以可以省略be，是因为be一般都不是什么重要的因素（一般时态和主句的时态一致，这点是我自己看题理解的），而这里显然不是这种情况。
这里如果要把have been写出来，那么就必须也补全主语，省略的话是主语谓语动词同进同出的，不会出现只省略主语或者只省略谓语动词的情况。这里sighted是过去分词。
举例说的话，although (he was) tired, he kept on studying. 这里的主语和从句主语一致，也是系动词，所以可以省略。
