答案是选B，但我一直在B与D中纠结，我觉得B存在问题是，根据曼哈顿说的The words before and after indicate the sequence of events clearly and emphatically enough to make the use of Past Perfect unnecessary.所以我觉得这里明显有before，主句用had been就没有必要了。
其次我觉得D没有问题，previously就用一般过去式啊~
求大神相助！！！！我现在真的有点迷惑了！！

强调了have a context bearing another action .也就是说，需要有一个time marker或 action marker来作为描述之前动作的基础,且之前发生的动作和这个marker
A 时态错误。A的意思是：在在GBT死前的20年或更多时间里，GBT（某个时点）是意大利最受尊敬的画家。不合逻辑。
B:正确
C：不正确。原来的意思是强调before”GBT死在1770“,强调这个动作，C 的意思before"dyling",强调死的行为
D：意思不清晰，previously修饰的也可能he was 后面这个SVO，
E:  意思完全改变了。好像说2个人。

这里属于前者的情况
死之前就开始成为了受人尊敬的意大利画家，表明一种影响。
而且DE有重心问题，逻辑不合理
