关于平行并列的一道题

答案是B

但感觉原句就不对啊：
have caused 后面：reversals…、the onset…、the splitting…、 great volcanic eruptions 四者中有些是特指，有些是泛指，能并列吗？
另外，最后一项改为“ eruptions of volcanics”会不会更好一些？

关于onset到底是什么词性的问题，后面是of ice ages，那么除了名词和某些特殊搭配，还能是什么词性？

首先，楼主要明白，GMAT是5选1，但不代表正确的答案是最好的答案，这里可以用eruptions of volcanics，但是如果你科技类的文章看多了你就能知道
1）volcanic eruptions 可能是习惯用法；
2）这样最简洁，读者看得懂，作者写得快（写科技文章的geek多以快好省为原则）。
关于平行结构，A, B, C, and D. 最基本就是ABCD都是同样属性和语义，然后再考虑工整的问题，楼主有点本末倒置了。
.....have caused reversals, the onset, the splitting, and eruptions
如果这样写楼主看出来你所提到的泛指的问题点了吗？
reversals /eruptions 复数
onset /splitting 要么单数＋a，要么复数，要么the
到底单复数还是the，就是语义和常识问题了。

Gmat本来就是5个选项选最优嘛。我不知道onset是否有动词形式或者仅仅只是concrete noun，但是从句子逻辑分析have caused the splitting就是最好的，也能够满足总的平行。

reversals； eruptions.都是action nouns.

唯独这个 the onset of ice ages，好像不是。

不过也许没什么必要纠结这种小细节，压根不会考到~~~

而B选项，the splitting 在曼哈顿中是 complex gerund,曼哈顿语法中说，complex gerund只能和action nouns平行，但这道题目the onset of an age..这种貌似就是concrete nouns吧。

楼主对平行的理解需要加强啊。平行不一定要完全的structure上的平行，大部分情况只需要核心词的平行和logical的平行即可。这里的the splitting apart continents恰恰用的非常好，因为可以充当名词，所以满足平行的要求，splitting apart continents 不可以。

应该可以并列吧。
great volcanic eruptions是adj+ adj+ n
核心词是eruptions，没问题。为什么要改呢？这跟big red ball是一样的结构。
