对答案D本身没有疑虑，LZ在想 Although covering the entire planet, Earth’s crust is neither seamless nor stationary, but rather（把it covers改成covering）是不是也是可行的。
LZ后来思考了下，觉得这个结构错误，理由：
1）状语从句省略谓语动词必须是be动词，显然这里不是省略结构
2）Although只做conj，不能直接接分词而必须接从句，这也是OG官方的解释。
如果把Although改成despite变为Despite covering the entire planet, Earth’s crust is neither seamless nor stationary, but rather是不是也是OK呢，虽然不optimal,没有答案D项好。
望CD NN们请教一下

despite是 介词，后面只能跟名词短语，covering作为 gerund, 可以 跟在despite后面。
有个例句：
Despite being a millionaire, he lives in a very small flat. 这应该就是楼主说的那个用法吧。
