Do you agree ordisagree with the following statement:
The governmentshould support scientific research that does not have any practical use
The technology hasbeen rapidly developed in recent years. More and more scientific researches requiringgovernment subsidies have emerged, and then the conflict opinions on government’sinvestigation raised. Some people advocated that the government should focustheir assistance exclusively on the researches that have practical use, while others argued that researches that donot have any practical use are worth investigating too. As far as I amconcerned, I am inclined to the latter.
Scientificresearches are valuable for not just their practical use, but also theirtheoretical and academic values. People who suggest the government invest onlyin research with practical use failed to notice the essential significance ofthe academic value. There are many influential scientists who major intheoretical sphere have made enormous significant differences to our world. Ifwe view the practical use of scientific research as wheels that can carry oursociety move forward, then the theoretical use of scientific research can beconsidered as the engine which the wheels can harness energy from. If thegovernment only investigates in those researches that have practical use, thedevelopment of the whole society will become decrease and finally stop.
Some people mayargue that theoretical research is useless for our daily life-which I takeleave to doubt-so that investigate in that research is a waste of money. But inlong vision, from my perspective, there will be no research that entirelyabsence practical value. For instance, human beings calculated the distancebetween earth and moon thousands of years ago, back to then, that research willbe considered as no practical use according to that context. But it is thatresearch that contributes remarkable effort to the first moon landing. Hence,we have to acknowledge that some researches may seem completely have nopractical use, but with the gradually development of our society, thoseresearches can be of great value someday.
And if we viewthis question from the government's perspective, we can find out that it is thegovernment's responsibility to sponsor varieties of scientific researches tomotivate scientists, in that way our society can develop consistently. If thegovernment treats different kinds of research unequally, some scientists whofocus on theoretical research may be disappointed and give up, then thisinequity may result in jeopardizing the progress of our society.
All in all, according to the reasons I demonstrated above, the government should supportscientific research that does not have any practical use.
