e)appeared to have been equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,

og 上解释；because Neamderthals "disappeared",the verb describing their apparent abilities cannot be present tense ,so as equipped must be changed to to have been equipped .
起初没懂为什么用appear而不是appeared，因为和后面的indicates平行，appear这一动作不是N发出的，应该有一个正在描述N 的这个人发朱的动作。但是为什么用 have been equipped 而不是equipped 简直懵了。N既然在P era 期间消失了，背景应该是过去时，为什么用现在完成时呢？并且og 解释（如上）似乎在说描述“消失”这一动词描述了他们的明显的能力，不能用现在时？？?而且og 对A的解释：As equipped indicates that N still appear this way ,这是神马跟神马   ？？？--------------------------求解求解

几乎一天都耗在这题上了，我来自己总结下城成果吧
首先这题给人造成误区的有二，N在动词appear 之前易理解成N发出这个appear的动作。其实不然，appear to do 是好像的，，，是题外有个人正在描述N正在对Ｎ进行评价。并且ａｐｐｅａｒ和ｉｎｄｉｃａｔｅｓ平行．其二，ｅｑｕｉｐｐｅｄ在ａｐｐｅａｒ之后ｅｑｕｉｐｐｅｄ是形容词，ｈａｖｅ　ｂｅｅｎ　ｅｑｕｉｐｐｅｄ强调在Ｎ消失之前就具备能力了。

仔细想一下，一群科学家发现了N，N现在摆在他们面前，从科学家的角度，而非N的角度，N appear to have ...indicate...
就好像有一天你在地上看见一件衣服，这衣服appears dirty，是指现在看起来很脏，而不是过去看起来很脏。
多读几遍，体会一下就明白了。

文中既然说了，N sudden disappearance, 所以不应该理解为，N以前出现，但是现在消失了么。。所以不就是应该用appeared么。。。我受不了。。

你说的所谓完成时，其实是“不定时的完成时”
而不定式的完成时，应该理解为不定式的过去时

平行不一定要时态平行
appear用现在时，是因为表示至今仍然成立的事情
to have been equipped用完成时，是因为当时一段时间成立，而今天不成立。
