E中what it was 中的it 为什么不能指代the population of the state ? PREP 中说E down from by 改变了句意，是否改变了句意？

其实这题what放在这里。。。额，好吧。
首先，E的确改变了句意，句意是说从奖金四分之三下降到略少于一半，但是E说的是下降了四分之三；
再者，what后面要it干嘛啊。。。这是我初中还是高中老实讲的啊，what引导从句的时候what是作两个成分的，这个句子要是用what 的话就不用it了，what不仅做了from的宾语，还作了重句中was的主语，所以it，你出来干嘛...而且GMAC本来就不喜欢WORDY的东西吧。
