我的选项：were the Maya who, without the benefit of the wheel or animal transport, built huge palace and temple clusters.
正确选项：the Maya built huge palace and temple clusters without the benefit of animal transport or the wheel.

答案说Architects and stonemasons, were the Maya is not a grammatical construction！！为嘛。难道是因为前面是复数所以要把Maya改成Mayas/Mayans?如果是这样，就跟people一样，可以用单数形式表达一个群体啊。lz反复读了正确选项几十遍，凭着自己语法还挺扎实的份上愣是觉得读着别扭啊！！！有这种直接用名词作为一个单独分局，修饰另外一个名词开头的句子的？

大家一起进来讨论讨论啊。求指点迷津。

正确句子是Architects and stonemasons, the Maya built huge palace and temple clusters without the benefit of animal transport or the wheel. 我们看这个句子结构。开头a and s是opening modifier修饰M, 这里的opening modifier是appositive，名词词语做同位语。
