73. The following appeared on the Mozart School of Music Web site.

"The Mozart School of Music should be the first choice for parents considering enrolling their child in music lessons. First of all, the Mozart School welcomes youngsters at all ability and age levels; there is no audition to attend the school. Second, the school offers instruction in nearly all musical instruments as well a wide range of styles and genres from classical to rock. Third, the faculty includes some of the most distinguished musicians in the area. Finally, many Mozart graduates have gone on to become well-known and highly paid professional musicians."
    
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

In this article the author claims that the Mozart School of music should be the first choice for parents considering enrolling their child in music lessons. To justify this conclusion, the author points out that no audition is required for children who want to attend the school and that the courses are available in all kinds of instruments as well as a wide range of styles and genres. Also, the author cites the fact that the faculty in this school includes some of the most distinguished musicians in the area and that many Mozart graduates have gone on to become well-know and highly paid professional musician. Although the evidence above may suggest that this school would be an excellent choice for certain prospective children, the conclusion that it should be the first choice for these students is unconvincing in three respects.

Firstly, the partial information about the enrollment policy vitiates the soundness of the author’s reasoning. The author only inform us that youngsters at all ability and all age are welcomed in the Mozart school, yet what we care more about is how the faculty can give specific instruction to all the enrolled students varied in age and ability at the same time. If these students could be arranged in different courses according to their ability, the quality of the courses might be assured. However, it is equally possible that students with various ability might be arranged in the same course since the school cannot provide enough courses to meet everyone’s need. For lack of further information, we can hardly evaluate whether the no-audition policy is a blessing or a curse.

Secondly, the author fail to indicate the actual number of the faculty who are among the most distinguished musicians in the area, and what percentage of the whole faculty group do they make up, so the efficiency of the fact to prove the quality of the faculty is open to doubt. Also, no explicit statics of the number or the percentage of graduates who become successful musician is provided. Without more thorough data, the author cannot substantiate the quality of the courses in the Mozart school and consequently fail to prove that it is the first choice for prospective children.

Additionally, the author unfairly assumes that the Mozart school should take credit for the graduates’ success. Perhaps these successful students are unusually talented and had acquired superb skill before their enrollment. Or perhaps these students are extremely assiduous in practicing which make them stand out from other classmates. For that matter, many other possibilities might contribute to the graduates’ success, which might render the assumption doubtful.

In sum, the conclusion seem to go beyond the scope of the information in the premise. To bolster it the author must show a more feasible resolution of student classification, cite more specific facts and statics of the faculty, and provided more background information of the successful graduates-perhaps by way of a detailed interview-to demonstrate the quality of the Mozart school’ education.
