It cannot refer to Organism, because here organism is an ADJECTIVE.(Organism's attempt).
Below is an example for you to better understand. (from Foundations of GMAT Verbal)
An IMPORTANT ERROR to watch out for on the GMAT- a pronoun trying to refer back to an adjective, when it should refer back to a NOUN.
[INCORRECT] The Chinese army is the largest military force in the world; they have approximately 3 million members.
Explaination: Here, Chinese is used as an adjective describing army. The pronoun they is attempting to refer back to either Chinese or army. The sentence is incorrect either way- Chinese is an adjective and army is singular, so the plural noun they cannot refer back to either word.
