The following appeared as part of an article in a business magazine.
"A recent study rating 300 male and female advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than six hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. On the basis of this study, we recommend that businesses hire only people who need less than six hours of sleep per night."

The author of the article recommends that businesses should only hire people who need less than six hours of sleep per night. She claims so based on the result of study in which those advertising executives who reported needing no more than six hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth in their business. The argument may seem somewhat reasonable at first glance. However, one could find several flaws in the evidences provided by the writer and deduction through careful scrutiny.
First, the writer cites the recent study involving 300 male and female advertising executives as her base on which the recommendation is lied. However, she fails to recognzie that there may be some limitations in the study. For instance, the study was carried out as the interviewee reporting their time needed for sleep. These advertising executives may not report thoroughly according to the real sleeping condition. They may intentionally report less time needed for sleep per night than the fact in order to make others feel that they spend more time on the work. Without ruling out such possibilities, the speaker cannot convince me that the result of the study can represent the true condition.
Second, the speaker takes it for granted that the extent to which a firm succeed can be measured by its profit margins and growth. Although common sense may tell us this is correct. Such is not always the case. Maybe the company's higher profit margins and faster growth is just a camouflage in order to attract more investments. Such kinds of chicanery is not unusual in the business market, especially those with derelict watchdog. Without accounting for these alternative explanations, I cannot be convinced that there is direct associasion between the success of a firm with its high profit margins and fast growth.
Even assuming that the study carried out is based on the truth and the implicit cause and effect is also correct. We may still doubt whether the study is representative. The study is involving 300 male and female advertising executives, while the recommendation suggested by the author covers the whole business. There are tens of thousands of business executives in the market and the author does not provide effective evidence to show whether 300 samples out of tens of thousands are representative. Also, the condition that less sleep time needed cause success in business may not remain true in the area outside of advertising business. The author must provide explicit evidence to demonstrate that the study is representative in the whole business. Otherwise, we cannot agree with the author's view that the recent study can contribute to the correct conclusion.
In sum, the author wants to convince us that her recommendation for the business to hire less sleep time needed people based on the study which shows that there is an association between the success and the less sleep time needed. However, the author fails to convince me that the evidence showed is correct and representative and the deduction is fair and sound. To better evaluate the argument, the speaker must provide more information that could answer these question: 1) Whether the subjects in the study reported according to the real situation? 2) To what extent is the success of a firm being related with its profit margin and growth? 3)Whether the study carried out is representative in the whole business?
