The president of the Humana University(HU) recommend that the school should import the online degree programs to increase the total enrollment and solve its budget problems. The president based mainly on the effect of the same program the Omni University (OU) has executed. However, there remains many questions to be clearly draw before getting a finnal conclusion. First, one question is the actual effect of the programs on enrollment. The president draw the statics that the student enrolled in the programs of OU has increased by 50 percent, however, this cannot indicate that the overall enrollment will increase, too. There is possible that the overall enrollment has dropped sharply due to the program in OU while an increase in the enrollment of the programs. And we are also not informed of the prior number of students of the programs. Thus although 50 percent is large as it seems, the actual number is very little. Without giving answer to these questions, the program may not help HU an increase in total enrollment. Moreover, another question whether the decrease of the OU's expenditures for dormitory and classroom space really results from the programs. Maybe the OU has combined some class to reduce the space, or the students of OU more and more perfer to live outside the school. Giving no clear answer to the main reason of the decrease in expenditures for space, the programs may not helpful. Even if the programs do help to increase the enrollment and decrease the expenditures for space, a third questions whether it will be helpful in solving the HU's budget problems. A decrease in space induce nothing to a decrease in budget. The cost of the introduction and the maintenance of the online programs may be very high and lead to a contradict situation. Lacking the explicity answer to this question, the president's purpose may not come true. The final question is whether the introduction of the programs is only way to help HU to overcome its hardship. HU may attract more students by adding more interesting courses that meet students' need, or circumstanting the everyday use of the resources such as water, electricity to abate its budget. If this question cannot be answered, it is cursory to introduce the programs. In sum, if the president want to realize his purpose, he must provide explicitly answer for these questions, whether the programs will increase the overall enrollment and decrease the space, whether the introduction of the programs is practical and whether there are other ways to help solve the problems. |
