I82:Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position

In an era of globalization, going abroad to study is no longer an impossible thing, thus the author asserts that students are supposed to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country. It should be admitted that studying abroad will absolutely offer students something they could not attain from school. However, the necessity and feasibility of this suggestion is still open to doubt for some critical reasons.

We should acknowledge that studying abroad may give students inspiration and broaden their horizon. Every country has its special history and culture which is hard to be expressed by pictures and words. The best way to get a better understanding of a country’s culture and history is to visit it. Besides, in some developed country, the laboratories and facilities there are rather advance, so studying there can provide the students with precious opportunities to learn the edge- cut knowledge in their fields. So studying abroad does have some merits for students.

Even though studying abroad is beneficial to some extent, the feasibility of this assertion is untenable. It is obvious that not all universities and colleges are capable to offer their students such opportunities, and quite a few students could not afford the expensive tuition and cost of living abroad.

Granted that the expense of studying abroad is not unaffordable as we thought, going abroad may bring about some harmful effects instead of benefits. For many young students, the new environment in a foreign country will inevitably make them excited. And these excitements may distract them from their true objectives of studying. And it also takes a long time for students to get used to the life in a foreign country which has a different language and unwonted eating habits. These factors listed above may be counterproductive for students to benefit a lot by studying abroad.

Going abroad is not the only way for students to know about the world and get useful information. For some universities and colleges which could not provide their students with the opportunities of studying abroad, there are some other methods to broaden their students’ perspective. Some discourses and exhibitions about foreign countries should be helpful, and the Internet may also help as well.

Well intended the author may be, going abroad to study for a semester is not as easy as many people consider, and it is also risky for immature students to live in a foreign country alone. Considering some essential factors listed above, it is not sensible for us to embrace the author’s suggestion.
