2011-8-20:The most important investment of a company is to improve the skills of its employees.

Following with the rapid development of society and economics, the competition among companies is increasingly fierce. To survive in the competition, a company should make the brilliant decision on how to invest money. Of course, making an investment to improve the skills of its employees seems a good idea, but is such investment necessary and the most important? I don’t agree with this statement.

Admittedly, the skills of employees in a company play an important role in determining whether or not a company can succeed in the fierce competition. After all, every decision the owners of a company makes should be implemented by its employees. Without employees with excellent skills, a company cannot operate normally, let alone achieve success. However, the skills of its employees are not the only determinant of a company's performance. Other factors such as company’s development planning, leader’s foresight, the quality of its product, after-sales services and even its advertisement also effect. Some of these factors seem to play more important roles than the skills of employees.

Firstly, the investment in exploring new areas and developing new products greatly benefits a company. To make much money, a company should be on the right way. Some products are popular and highly profitable while other products are not. Thus, if a company explores a new area where competition is less intense and highly profitable, its chance of success will be improved greatly. For example, before Facebook, no companies recognized the potential of social network website. It's also ironic that in the early stage of facbook, few people were willing to join Facebook. However, Facebook developed the new profitable business area that no one has explored before. As a result, Facebook has already made a big fortune in the stock market and is now attracting numerous young people with excellent skills to serve it.

What's more, the investment in product quality control also contributes to success of a company. Actually, it's the quality of its products that attract customers to make purchase and finally bring a company a large fortune. Therefore, the quality of a company's products should be the most important factor to guarantee success of a company. Without quality, a company having numerous employees with excellent skills is still highly possible to go bankrupt. For instance, I had a friend, Tom, who operated a small company producing and selling snacks. To earn money, he hired many employees graduating from top university in my country, such as Tshinghua Uiniversity and Peking University. Most of them major in marketing. Tom believed that good advertisements can make his company and the products well-known and thus attract the increasing number of customers buying its products. Although the employees with excellent marketing knowledge successfully designed several gorgeous commercials put in local TV programs and newspapers, his company finally went bankrupt because the company's products, snacks, have not advantages over its competitors and are of low quality.

To be sure, the improvement of the skills of a company's employees is important. But investment in other factors such as exploring new business areas and enhancing the quality of its product seems more helpful for its success. When making decision about an investment, mangers should not ignore other important factors.

2011-12-09: Agree or disagree: A person's job has more effects on his or her happiness than this person's social life does.

Does a person's job or his/her social life contribute more to his/her happiness? People are divided about this issue. As far as I’m concerned, there is not a standard solution to this question. Different types of people might gain happiness through various ways in different fields.

A reserved, shy person is more likely to feel unconformable when associating with other people. For him/her, social life is not a great avenue to happiness. In this situation, his/her job might have more effects on his/her happiness than his/her social life does. If he/she is a goal oriented person or even a workaholic, he/she might probably gain happiness from job. For this kind of people, a job is not only a tool to make money and support their family, but also effective way to gain a sense of safety, respectfulness and achievement. In fact, a job suitable for a person is a great avenue for him/her to achieve self-actualization. For instance, my neighbor Tom is a workaholic who almost regards his job as his whole life. He often stays up late to revise PPT for tomorrow's presentation. To gain promotion, he frequently works overtime at the expense of the time with his family members at weekends. He believed that only when he is working, he can gain achievement and respect from his colleagues and boss. In this case, Tom is eager to gain happiness through his job although it seems that he overestimates the importance of job.

On the contrary, an outgoing person who is fond of making new friends and having fun with old friends is more probable to obtain happiness from social life. For these outgoing people, they feel more conformable and safe when they are accompanied with other people. They appreciate the laugh they make with their friends, a gorgeous trip they share with their family, which become the source of their happiness. For example, my little sister Emily is this kind of people. She cannot tolerate being alone without her friends' company. Day and night, she participated in different parties, travels, sports activities to meet friends, talk to them and share with them her happiness and sorrow. For her, a workaholic is unbelievable. Actually, she disgusts work overtime and the sedentary work like the work of a secretary who often has to stay in his/her own seat for several hours alone. In this case, it seems that only through social life, Emily can gain happiness.

To be sure, only a job cannot bring a person permanent happiness; nor can social life. Social life is necessary for one to gain support both emotionally and materially. Not one can survive without social life altogether. Even a workaholic should sometimes relax himself from heavy work through social activities; otherwise, he might end with exhausting himself. Similarly, not one can live without working. A person should make money through working to meet his/her and family’s basic requirement; apart from financial condition, one should also realize his/her self vale and social value through working. In short, both a job and social life is the necessary ingredient for one’s happiness.

Of course, a person's job and social life are not the only alternatives for his/her way toward happiness. There are other factors that contribute to one's happiness. To identify one’s source of happiness, we should first examine his/her character, temper and so on.

2011-09-24:    Colleges or Universities should offer morecourses to prepare students for the future before they start working.

Following with the rapid development ofsociety and economics, the competition to get a position in the job market isalso increasingly fierce. Some students are eager to gain help from theircolleges or universities to make preparation for their upcoming job interviewwhile other students insist that it’s not necessary and even a waste of academicresources for colleges or universities providing such service. People aredivided over this issue. As far as I'm concerned, I tend to agree that collegesor universities should offer students a better job preparation.

Firstly, a better job preparationdefinitely benefits college students especially those who are facing thedifficulties in seeking a proper job. Generally, colleges or universities arethe last stop before students enter society which seems unfamiliar and formidablein the eyes of most students. Thus, students are eager to gain knowledge andnecessary employable skills from their colleges to deal with totally strange societyand fierce competition among job market. To some degree, it’s also colleges oruniversities’ responsibilities to provide students with a guideline of their newlife. The first step of their new life, it is to seek their dream work. Anyuseful and practical skills for their job hunting, including how to write agood resume, how to behave in front of interviewer and even which kind of suitthey should wear to attend the job interview, would be necessary and extremelyimportant for college students. For example, my brother gained muchhelp from his college last year when he graduated from it. The advisors in thestudent employment guidance center of his college gave him many valuable suggestions, such as some small tips to conquer the nervousness in a job interview, whichare truly helpful for him. Thanks to the great help he gained from his college, which he appreciated very much, he got a good job.

What's more, providing students with abetter job preparation also benefit the college itself. The job preparationhelping students achieve their dream work would also bring the college greatprestige, which benefits the college's development since a college whosegraduates have good job and do well in their work would definitely attract manystudents to study there. Those excellent graduates benefiting from thecollege's job preparation service to gain their dream work are also a college'sgreat fortunate and honor. For instance, my university is famous for itsexcellent graduates who are employees and even leaders of governmentorganizations, research institutes and famous multinational corporations suchas P&G, GE, IBM and Microsoft. Apart from their own abilities, thesegraduates' excellent performance in seeking their dream work also partially becauseof the job preparation course for seniors provided by my universities.

Some might argue that the main role ofcolleges or universities is not to provide students a better job preparation tohelp them seek a good job. Admittedly, colleges or universities should providemore education besides job seeking guidance. However, a job preparation notconflicts with colleges or universities' main goal, which is said to offerwell-educated citizens to serve our society and community. In my view, collegesor universities' education should be beyond but also necessarily include thejob preparation guidance. Actually, job preparation of colleges anduniversities also serves the realization of their main education goal.

In summary, it's necessary for colleges or universitiesto offer students a better job preparation.
