ACCT PhD 2013 Fall 申请评估

这是我很多年以来的梦想. 由于种种原因, 我在本科和硕士毕业的时候放弃申请. 总觉得其实我的梦想并不遥远, 如果我根本不尝试就放弃就妥协, 我会抱憾终身的

恳请大家帮我看看我进UNC-CH 或Duke 会计博士项目的希望有多大(家住离两个学校20分钟车程的小镇, 我没有绿卡)

1. 本科: B.S. in Accounting, GPA 3.9+, Highest distinction from a TOP 30 U.S. B-school
2. 硕士: M.S. in　Accounting, GPA 3.6＋,  too bad lower than my undergrad GPA．　Top 10 MACc program in U.S.
3. GMAT: 720, Writing 4.5, 准备了大概两个星期吧
4. Research experience: None.　读硕士的时候，我是学费全免并且还有ＳＴＩＰＥＮＤ．我是Associate Dean 的研究助理，　但所做的工作不过是收集和简单的处理数据．我想这跟正儿八经的研究完全是两码事．
5. 两年美国中型公司成本分析的工作经验．　美国CPA 考试过了但没有执照．
6. 准备下半年去Duke 和　UNC-CH 旁听相关课程．　
７．　推荐信不确定是否能拿到牛推．本科和硕士的学校都有大牛，尤其是硕士学校的老师，有前FASB 的主席，可惜没上他老人家的课．　给我上课的有两个大牛，不过他俩的可我都只拿了Ｂ．　入学的时候自我感觉太好了，头一个半月根本就没学习啊．　后悔阿．．．．．
我倒是可以从一般的老师拿到很强的推荐信，　因为总体来说我的绝大部分专业课的成绩都很好．

劳烦路过的帮忙看看我能否进我的dream school, Duke or UNC-CH. 我已婚，老公在北卡　ＲＴＰ　工作．　这两个学校离家都只有２０分钟，　又这么强，若是能收我，　我绝对不再向上帝他老人家抱怨了．(P.S. 以前两个学校都离家很远．)

说句实话，你有去听他seminar的想法就是错误的，如果说你不去听他的seminar，你还有点机会再duke，如果去了，我敢保证，你一点机会都没有了。。。

你本科和master都是会计的背景，可以说econ的储备趋近于0, 本来可以把这个拙藏起来，多强调你的institutional knowledge，可是你如果去听了他theory的seminar，上来diamond&verrecchia和holmstrom&milgrom就给你造晕了，你觉得你还会有戏嘛？

如果你直接去，当然很不利。It's unprofessional. 一般来讲外面的人是不能来上我们seminar的。不过如果Fuqua有workshop，你是可以来听的。可以去网页上看看。不过如果没有研究经历，那些paper来了跟听天书差不多。

怎么讲呢，也许phd一直是你的梦想，不过可能只是梦想。因为你从来没有为之做过准备。你的背景完全是为corporate准备的。我倒是建议你问问自己，Am I really passionate about PhD? If yes, why didn't I do anything in the past to prepare for it?

如果你可以说服你自己，去投入五六年的时间申请+学习，那恭喜你。你的背景进入个不错的program应该还是没问题的。

悲剧了. 果然如 ProfCPA 所言,我跟DUKE一个教授联系,他说 " I don’t think my PhD seminar in accounting theory is suitable for you at this stage. Even Duke PhD students need to take the first year PhD courses in microeconomics before they are allowed to take this course. "

其实我只不过是问可不可以去听听课, 没想到就直接悲剧了. 我想我如果直接去的话, 这老师会不会对我很反感, 对我以后正式申请不利?

UNC 的老师倒是友好一些. 我说我想修课, 他建议我去听听有点感觉. 不过还等着最后回复呢.

大家有什么建议吗?

It's actually not easy for you to attend PhD classes at Duke or UNC since you are not a current student (note education is not free.  It's harder to get RA work.

Your background is pretty good. One disadvantage is that you don't have much research related experience. Nowadays I see many successful applicants have substantial research experience. That's why BYU grads are so popular.

Actually no need to redo GMAT. But you don't want to limit yourself to Duke and UNC. There are many many solid programs in the US that produce good PhD students, and you can do some homework on this board to find them.

等你申请完2012－2013这一轮 你对自己的水准应该也有明确认识了

i noted this as well.  do you have any idea how many BYU graduates are there each year?

感觉LZ可以把重点放在Duke上面，其实LZ background我感觉挺match的。老师们招人在background相差不大的时候也会考虑你是不是回来，你这种情况给了你钱肯定回来的，毕竟就在家边上，所以如果能够prove你有足够的potential，那么应该有希望。

不过小心，陶瓷的结果也有可能是自己很差本来包装包装简历还可以，但是一陶瓷就暴露了自己不行。

另外，LZ GMAT是不是可以考虑重考？（如果重考成本不大的话？）

我想秋季去他们两家的seminar, 还有个非分之想就是做免费的研究助理，学习做研究，或者搞个推荐什么的。 但照着你的意思 似乎有些不切实际，对吗？

再补充几句 我的意思是 如果现在生活安稳 你就是去Duke跟UNC做Freelance的RA 都能强大的帮助到你申请PHD

accounting的老师不缺免费的ra，学校里面一堆的phd都不一定能捞的着机会。更何况一个申请的学生，什么都不大懂，他们根本不会去花时间培训你的。

想去免费听seminar可以和教课的老师谈，如果老师nice，应该不是大问题，当然也有一些老师不愿意，毕竟你连他们学校的学生都不是。

免费ra那个基本是没戏希望的，他们有告诉你怎么做的时间，自己早都做完了。
