不明白为什么C不对，but后面的主语难道不是other Scandinavian kings么，要是把逗号去了就对吗？还有E中but的用法，前面有一个逗号，还能当介词么？总感觉有歧义啊

我来说下我的想法：
an achievement that other Scandinavian kings attempted later in the century to repeat (...), but were not successful at it.
首先，achievement在从句中充当宾语的成分，是国王们attempted to repeat (an achievement)
but平行的是两个动词：attempt 和 were
那么把后半句补充完整，other kings were not successful at it (指代achievement）  ※问题就出在这里，前面先行词是achivement，你这里it指代的又是achievement，an achivement that kings were not successful at it 就重复了，应该把it去掉。

我想问问，Ron说过but后面必须跟句子，除非是两个并列的东西用but连接，但是这里e里面but用法错了吧？

是不是因为相同主语两个动作不能被 , and 分开，要么把逗号去掉，要么就加上一个主语。我也在纠结这个道题，想来想去就这个解释最让我理解。

来看看这个句子结构哦，你看But后面接的那个句子没有主语，按照整个句子结构来看，这个but也是an achievement后面的修饰语，应该是that的一部分才对，可是意思上来看这个were not successful指的确实other scandinavian kings，这是不对的，结构混乱，逻辑上也说不过去。

其实这也是Gmat常用技巧之一，把两个主语混在一个从句里面修饰一个主语，稍不注意读下来就会觉得理所当然，意识不到错误。

谢谢！不过还想问一下，下面这样的结构是不是有问题 an achievement that (other scandinavian kings attempted XXX but were not successful at it)，括号里面but在that后面链接前后主语一致的两个句子，两个句子都是从句。

这个句子本身是有问题的。简单说其实就是，定语从句中可以并列了两个谓语。或者说两个不同功能的that从句修饰同一对象，第二个that必须补出。
