Although various eighteenth- and nineteenth-century
American poets had professed an interest in Native
American poetry and had pretended to imitate Native
American forms in their own works, until almost 1900,
scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study
traditional Native American poetry in native
languages.

(A) until almost 1900, scholars and critics did not
begin seriously to study
(B) until almost 1900 scholars and critics had not
begun seriously studying
(C) not until almost 1900 were scholars and critics
to begin seriously to study
(D) it was not almost until 1900 when scholars and
critics began to seriously study
(E) it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and
critics seriously began studying

1,to begin seriously to study, 这个东东为什么是wordy的?

原句的意思是说“In 1990, they began to study ....”,这里面没有“to begin”的意思,而“to begin”相当于“will”的感觉,这与原句的意思有差别,所以是错误的~

from baby姐:

(C) not until almost 1900 were scholars and critics to begin seriously to study
In 1990, Scholars and critics were to begin to study ....

I am to apply to MBA.
I will apply to MBA (some time in the near future).

In 1990, Scholars and critics were to begin to study ....
这句子并没有说when did they begin to study!

而原句的意思是(忽略almost):In 1990, they began to study ....

Not until almost 1990 did scholars and critics begin ...

搜到一个关于 since vs. because 的帖子。Manhattan staff 的回复:
Although lots of people use "since" to mean "because" in common language today, that's not the original / "official" meaning of the word. Since means "from the time that" or "between then and now" or something along those lines - so the guest poster is right that we should use "since" when we're talking about a period of time and "because" when we're talking about cause and effect. Don't use "since" (on the GMAT) to mean "because."

-- by 会员 bob9603 (2012/7/4 20:26:23)

I did not go outside because it is raining.
-- by 会员 abc88 (2012/7/5 3:32:32)

The Glass House Mountains in Queensland, Australia,
were sighted in 1770 by the English navigator Captain
James Cook, by whom they were named supposedly
because its sheer wet rocks glistened like glass.

(A) by whom they were named supposedly
because its
(B) by whom they were named supposedly and their
(C) naming them supposedly since their
(D) who so named them supposedly because their
(E) who so named it since supposedly their
