To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must learn its major cities.
Promoted by the exponentially developed modern achievements, now people, manumitted from too much fag, incline to deliberate on far-reaching proposals, which, I believe, benefit our society as well as environment significantly. One of these issues, as the author puts, is that, for the sake for learning the most important characteristics of any society, must we concentrate on major cities? Certainly, I must commit that the author does provides us with a suitable gauge. However, in my own viewpoint, besides major cities, there are other regions, say the rural districts, which also represent some important characteristics of a society as well. There is no denying that the major cities are so chromatic that they include a great number of crucial factors of a society. Firstly, the major cities represent the financial development of a society. In New York, there locates the Wall Street, where transactions between dealers take place, and it also is the symbol of American economy. Secondly, major cities are filled with the most advanced technology of their nation: the highest building with the newly-invented architectural methods; the fastest sport car equipped with the best engine, etc. Thirdly, the main entertainments, which citizens enjoy, can be seen it major cities as well. For instance, opera theaters, movie cinemas, speech halls, music bars. In brief conclusion, major cites undoubtedly consist various traits of their nation and society. However, except for the examples listed above, other important traits may be found outside of major cities. For example, anyone who wants to understand the conventional ethos of China, he/she must investigate its rural districts, where the people still hold traditional rituals. Take the country music in America as another example. As one of the most influential and original music genre, country music is created by country farmers and then becomes popular till nowadays. So it is unbelievable if anyone who claims a well-learning of it without investigate its origin source: the countryside life. In a word, only study major cities while omitting other regions can never capture the whole scene of the main portrait of any nation. In fact, as far as I am concerned, the major cities represent the up-to-date characteristics of a society, but, unfortunately, for several reasons, they fail to continue some traditional traits. On one hand, constrained by the fast pace of everyday life, people, with less familiarity with their neighbors, in major cities have little time to carry out some rituals which, I believe, represent the most characteristics of a nation. Simply put, during the Halloween, it is hard to see children in New York, one of these major cities, walking door by door to play “trick or treat”. However, in most villages where people share more confidential relationship, the game still exists. On the other hand, since most major cities are replete with people from different countries, who own different religious beliefs and different customs, it is unthinkable for them to reconcile with each other and share uniformed characteristics. For instance, in New York also, where the immigrants consist of a great percents of its total population, there are various celebrations conducted by people from different nations. However, these celebrations represent the characteristics of their own native nations, rather than America. In conclusion, major cities, like New York in general, represent the up-to-date factors of its nation, while some other regions, like rustic districts or smaller cities, show the conservative traits. |
