Retail sales rose 0.8 of 1 percent in August, intensifying expections that personal pending in the July-September quarter more than doubled that of the 1.4 percent growth rate in personal spending for the previous quarter.

题目的正确答案是B：

(B) that personal spending in the July-September quarter would more than double

请问一下这里的would more than double充当什么成分？感觉这句缺少谓语啊，难道double可以做动词？那more than是什么修饰成分呢？

（2）P662的第24题：

In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it.

本题的正确答案是E：

attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.

请问这里harmless和the chemical irritant充当什么语法成分？harmless和irritant都是形容词啊。

1，double当然可以作动词，这句从句中动词是would double。本来是would double.....就是是啥的两倍，而more than修饰double，意思是超过两倍，两倍多的意思。

2，irritant这里是名词，刺激物的意思。
attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.这句话是倒桩。
原语序是：attempt to metabolize, or render the chemical irritant harmless.
