题目:It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is forthem to learn facts.

我的文章:Which is more important forstudents: to learn facts directly or understand the ideas and concepts behindthe facts? Well, while understanding the ideas and concepts is important, learning the facts, as a necessary step to establish a solid foundation for thelearning process for students, is more important in my opinion.

First of all, it is too abstractfor students to just understand ideas and concepts since every concept or idea isobtained from facts. We would not be able to (cannot) understand concepts wellenough if we do not learn facts first. For example, it will be very hard for anelementary student to understand the concept of “the shortest distance betweentwo points is a straight line” if the teacher teaches just by telling theconcepts. But if the teacher gives specific examples to show the measurementresults of the straight line is the shortest distance between two points, itwill be much clearer and easier for students to understand and memorize.

Secondly, it is very difficultfor students to understand a concept or idea without enough examples and facts. As we know, all the great ideas created by great people are from thousands of real-lifeexperiments. These ideas cannot come into being without these supportingexperiments.

Last but not the least, the conceptsand ideas will become useless if we do not put them into practice. In otherwords, while concepts and ideas originate from facts, they will in turn enhanceand improve the facts via real-life practices (concepts and ideas not onlyoriginate from facts but finally will also get back into facts). After all, theultimate goal that scientists extract and define scientific concepts is toprovide guidance and improvement to our real-life practices. Therefore, it isundoubtedly certain that it is more critical for students to learn facts thanto learn concepts and ideas.

To sum up, we can clearly drawthe conclusion that learning facts is more important than understanding ideasand concepts for students. Without the facts and the applications of the conceptsand ideas, what the students learn will be the castles in the air. And only ifthe students learn facts well, will they be able to absorb the ideas andconcepts more thoroughly.
