求一道语法题目，解释和曼哈顿不一样,怎么回事?

OG251题说:The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.
正确答案就是A, 可是在曼哈顿语法上第13章,关于数字的比较一章,说if you want to relate to quantities by multiplications, use times and as...as together,
Right: The man is five times as old as his grandson.
Wrong: The man is five times older than his grandson.
请教一下这样的解释不是和OG的正确选项冲突吗?还是另有其他意思,我还没弄明白呢?

我也看到了manhattan后面说OG出了这样的题目正确答案就是有比较级的那个，但是后面说尽管如此，尽量不选这样的答案.那是不是以OG为准呢?
也就是说 倍数可以和比较级在一起呢?

manhattan后面那段不就是说···虽然OG出过这个题选这个，但是in general, this usage should be avoided.

这两个的区别是N倍和N+1倍的关系吧，只能说是意思不对，但语法并无错吧。。这样想，如果题目A给的是times+比较级+than，是不是就算对的？
