我对于答案没有歧义，可是对于非划线部分Less......than 有疑问。    
Less....than 是一个比较结构，因此相互比较的东西必须可比。  
原句中less...than的用法我认为可以缩写为
profits delined less than analysts had expected.      即：利润的减少低于分析所预期的。
Less...than的比较对象其实是declined  和  analysts...   即：比较的对象是减少和分析（这是Gmat语法常考的错误点啊），而这两者不可比。
我认为原句应该改为：
The company announced that its profits declined much less in the second quarter than what analysts had expected and that its business would improve.
我不知道自己对此理解是否正确，希望广大G友能够各抒己见，共同进步！

省略的至尊原则就是，没有逻辑错误不会引起歧义的话则能省就省，否则都要补出

than 后面是一个表达that 的定语从句。
that指代profits，重复故省略

我读起来也觉得很顺。可是如果是省略了，我想知道什么情况下能省略。毕竟做对一个题不是目的，知道原则才能避免类似误读啊！求赐教，谢谢~

明白lz的意思，其实lz是多虑了，你可以看到有很多G的正确句子都是这样，than experts thought, than he expected, ....

仔细分析，应该是省略what的，省略后并没有歧义，而且更简洁。
