啊我翻了之前的讨论，the chemical irritant是metabolize的宾语，or render harmless是插入语，用换一种说法的方式解释metabolize，所以the chemical irritant是最简洁的用法。

我觉得这个不是attempt to 的宾语，这个应该是一个同位语，解释enzymes， 这个chemical irritant应当和enzymes是一个东西，从这个角度来看，irritant肯定比that is irritating it要简洁很多。

至于try to do，做动词没错，但是这里看句子结构是需要一个名词，名词大于动名词。

attempt to try 是重复的意思。所以E选项是最好的。
