hot sauces是原句想描述的东西，作者只是用exercise来类比，C改变了原句的意思。而且exercise也不能和前面的besides内容搭配。
至于these，我不能给出完全专业的解释，但这道题中的A选项,just as exercise does是插入成分可不看，这样一来我觉得these没有什么不好，可以指代前面的hot sauces
