问题：OG上说C选项的them指代不清，可能指代tourists；但是为什么E选项的them就不存在指代不清的情况呢？

先看raising那一串。V-ing前面如果没有逗号，那它就是形容词作定语，就近修饰前方的紧邻名词tourists。那后面的them就也是指代tourists的了。整个句子的层次应该是【because of mositure】，然后【that was exhaled by tourists】是定语从句修饰mositure，再然后【raising那一串修饰tourists】。但是，这个层次是从语义或者说逻辑角度看其实是错误的。。

(E) because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing

exhaled在这里不是动词，是V-ed在做形容词，是后置定语。也就是说句子逻辑是【because moisture had raised the .....】
而是什么样的mositure呢？作者给了一个【V-ed的形容词来修饰】，是【tourists呼出的moisture】

至于them，C中because后面句子主语是tourists，them自然优先指代就近的逻辑主语tourists。
D中them放在了moisture的定从中，them自然指代了定从复数名词tourists
E中by tourists仅是修饰moisture的成分，them根据逻辑意思不可能修饰tourists。
翻译下仔细体会：
C：因为人们呼出（令在them中湿度提高）的湿气
D：因为（被人们呼出提高them中湿度）的湿气
E：（被人们呼吸）的湿气使（在them中）的湿度提高。没人会想修饰成分them再修饰一个修饰成分中的复数名词吧

BTW,them指代很复杂，应该着眼大处错误优先·

看了两遍题目，个人认为E中because引导的原因状语从句仍然是主句the chambers...的从句，them根据逻辑含义代指主句中的主语。
但是C中的them出现在了主句原因状语从句中的定语从句（moisture的定语从句）中，结构上更适合指代状语从句中出现的复数名词。

题目考点不在这里，但是还是很感慨Flicka的细心程度，之前完全没有注意到这个地方呢。

啊，虽然because of...doing是一个错误的用法，我们暂且还是把它看做一个固定用法，这里出现的that是moisture的定语从句，而moisture自己啊，，tourists，them啊都是becasue of doing这个“固定用法”中的成分，跟C是不一样的情况。
另外我真的不确定我之前这种解释对不对……再解释没准就该走上邪道了……

那么D呢？为什么D指代tourists而E不会？

做了好多SC了，感觉从句里面的代词指代问题是比较复杂的。
我看了笔记总结了一下觉得如果从句中的代词要指代像C一样的那种情况-tourist，较近的名词则要加逗号。不加逗号的话会发生指代错误。
忘大牛们指正。
