这个when they do appear 是放错地方了。原因是they指代不明。因为前面的ones 其实不是指再前面的signs of .... , ones 只能表明会misinterpret的那些signs。所以they是指ones （会被misinterpret的signs)还是指前面的会被miss的signs 呢，这就指代不明了。 而如果将ones 替代them, 则都是指同一个signs of .... 所以后面的they指代是清晰的

IN B, "when they do appear " modifies makes.
in E,  it modifies miss or misinterpret, so GMAC says that B is a misplaced modifier.

参照E答案的话，我觉得B答案中的"when they do appear"应该放到"misinterpreting ones"之后，"likely"之前，因为这个时间状语只是修饰"misinterpreting ones"的，如果放到"likely"只够就变成既修饰"misinterpreting ones"又修饰"missing signs of incipient trouble"

B选项里when they do appear放在了likely后面，因此修饰的是makes missing signs of incipient trouble or misinterpreting ones likely整个成分，也即修饰的是makes，如果放到likely前面，就不会有修饰歧义，但是会让句子显得非常不自然（一个Likely挂在后面，很有修饰appear的歧义），依然是错句。
而E选项里misinterpret是动词，所以when they do appear能够仅修饰misinterpret。
