引导宾语从句的that在下列情况下一般不省略：

1. 宾语从句前有插入语。如：

We hope, on the contrary, that he will stay at home with us. 恰恰相反，我们希望他和我们呆在家里。

2. 有间接宾语时。如：

He told me that he was leaving for Japan. 他告诉我他要去日本。

3. that在与之并列的另一个宾语从句之后。如：

He said (that) the book was very interesting and that(不省略) all the children like to read it.他说那本书很有趣，所有小孩都喜欢读。

4. 在“it(形式宾语)+补语”之后时。如：

5. that从句单独回答问题时。如：

对 对 不过 我真的想问你 一下  因为 在 XDF  老师说 宾语从句 一定加 that  但是 很多情况是 可以省略that  到底有多少单词 后面跟宾语从句可以省略 that 呀 这个我特别纠葛

然后关键看插入语“presuming such life forms left fossil traces to begin with”，这个插入语中含有一个宾语从句。通常presume (that)后面可跟宾语从句，此时that是可以省略的。这里，left是谓语。“leave traces to begin with”,留下跟踪的线索。

我其实 最近 有点晕 这个that  我再发一贴 专门讨论这个 THAT 的问题 我之前 有发过这个that 的 帖子 版主 给我回复了 一下 但是不是很具体 我再 发下 看看大家什么讨论结果

的确，加THAT结构更清晰。我也不懂这THAT是可剩还是不可省。可HAVING首先 无缘无故的，为啥要用完成失态呢？其次这个have+ing看起来就有点不善耶，就像我们对being无好感一样。

应该是 presuming that 吧 要不然 插入语结构不对呀
