人家的意思是，原句如果不省略，就是the rate of...in France and the rate of...in US are about the same。但是原句省略了，所以应该是the rates of ... in France and US are about the same. 所以D,E两个选项用了rate，明显是错的

What the stimulus want to say is that the rate of food consumption in France and the rate of food consumption in US are about the same, but the death rates in these two countries are different.

In fact, if you pay attention to the words "death rates" in the stimulus, you already know the right choice of words in either D or E - rates!
