Mr.Blatt: Expert consultants are sought after by management because they help executives make better decisions. That is why they are worth the substantial fees they charge.
Blatt: Expert consultants are hired based on their expertise. A more competent consultant is worth a more expensive fee. In other words, the competence of an expert determines his/her pay and executives are seeking expertise to solve problems.
Ms. Fring: Nonsense. Expert consultants are hired in order to enable executives to avoid responsibility. The more the experts cost, the more they can be blamed when things go wrong.
Fring: If consults are hired, then the executives can avoid responsibility. If more money is paid to the consultant, then the executives can blame more on the consultants when the company fails. If these statements are true, then a company would hire the most expensive consultants so that the executives can avoid the most blames. In other words, the executives are seeking scapegoats rather than expertise when hiring consultants.
(C) A successful firm of expert consultants seeks to increase its volume of business by reducing its fees, but its volume of business drops.
In this case, the expertise of these consultants does not change. The only thing that changes is that their fees are reduced. If Blatt is right, companies would love to hire these experts at a reduced price. So the volume of business should increase or remain the same, but certainly not decrease. If Fring is right, the executives would hire other more expensive experts to avoid the blames. So the price reduction in fees would lead to less business for the consulting company. According to (C), Fring appears right. |
