比较困惑的是D项为什么错？

答案是A。

although省略的情况：although放于句首，主语与主句一致，后面是系动词be+形容词，则主语和系动词可以省略。如：although young, he plays basketball well.

我看OG解释应该意思是Although后面应该要加完整的主谓结构, 不能省略. 还没有看完OG, 所以不知道后面有没有题例外.

另外, be visible和appear as完全两个含义, 语义有极大不同. 我做题的时候是根据这个来排错的, 虽然OG解释里没有.

是不是因为主句和从句虽然共用一个主语，但是谓语动词不同，一个appear,另一个have been所以不能省略呢？如果把appear改为are visible呢？

are visible是能看到
出现并不等于能看到吧？这两个意思不一致了吧。

although后面跟省略，在本题中应为although never sighted最简洁，
或在牵强一些，也应该是although having never been，although never having been 错。
另，although 从句省略一般感觉although领的内容不是句子主要意思，而且多作为插入语或句首。象本题是句子主要意思，所以尽量不要省略。

一点浅见。

楼上说对了！不能用having。although后面接完整的主谓结构，补出主语，很清晰不是主谓结构。另外，随意添加实义动词appear。

我觉得本题C选项although就是个省略的用法，不过被省略的主语具体指代有歧义，是指sunspots还是dark spots?...不知道我这样理解的对不对。
