我是这样想的:如果要问it 为什么不能指代 a sketchy picture, 就要先说清it 100%为什么不指代 an all-female cult,所以哪怕只有1%的可能性，也有歧义.

我也有同样的疑问，虽然能够感觉出来是E选项最好，但是B中，it为什么不能指代a sketchy picture?

原来based on是这么错了~

base A on/upon B，scholars based on缺少一个A。
但是这题中其实based是过去分词，表示的是被动，如果选了a，就变成了scholars are based on...，scholars就变成了上面例子中的A了，逻辑错误。

这题的关键是考察逻辑意思的合理性：首先要理解accounts of是指某人对某事的叙述描述等（a written or spoken description that says what happens in an event or process），原文想表达的是科学家基于ancient writers的描述，去干了件什么事（具体是啥事不关咱的事，后面就别浪费时间看了）
C.with sth. used for a basis介词短语表伴随（如he came with a gift beutifully packed.），且不说used for a basis表达的累赘，“伴随着使用某人的描述作为基础，科学家干了件什么事”，逻辑意思根本就不对嘛，所以C是既redundant又logically wrong
同样，ABD逻辑意思都不对

总之，这几个选项都是分词或介词短语作have painted 的状语，还原以后更方便体会句意，如：scholars have painted a sketchy picture With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis

另外，base的用法也很重要（重点看第二个），仔细体会下就能知道为什么AB不对了～
