(Warwick University)

Chartered Accountant (ACA), CFA Level 3 Candidate

Hey there, thanks for the thoughtful note.  But as I just mentioned to another friend above, I disagree with the idea that any company would prefer a Booth MBA to an HBS MBA.  Now, of course I may be biased since I went to HBS!    But everyone I know who gets into HBS or Stanford GOES TO HBS OR STANFORD.  If you get into HBS, you will not choose Booth—no matter HOW good the finance reputation of Booth is.  So the short answer to your question is that “no,” I do not know any schools that focus on buy-side institutions.  For sure, Wharton is known for finance, as is Columbia and Booth.  But most companies would prefer an HBS grad to a Booth grad—after all, HBS is the more selective school.  We tell all our clients to go to the best school you can get into.  HBS has a VERY high-powered finance group.  If you get into HBS, don’t go to Booth…

Hello there!  It would be my pleasure to offer up some guidance for you here.  First of all, congrats on a great GMAT score.  You absolutely do have a shot at the best programs in the world, including top five programs.  However, you will need to be careful as you describe your future goals.
With a background in accounting, it would be the easiest for schools to believe that you WILL go into Investment Banking.  So while you might be able to get into the buy-side after school, it wont help your application to talk about that.  Instead, say that you want to go into banking!  That is the closest fit to your past jobs, and therefore schools will see your application as being the least risky. Schools are worried that their students wont get jobs—and for you to say that you want to work for a hedge fund will be perceived as being risky to them.  So instead, stick with your strengths!  Focus on banking in your application, and then once you get into school, you can move into PE.  With a great school on your resume (HBS, Booth, etc.) you will be able to get one of those jobs.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi Jon, Thanks very much for your advice and I will definitely factor them into my essay. I am just wondering if you know any schools are particularly appealed to the buyside institutions. I am aware that whether I can find a job in buyside after school is very much dependent on my past working experience and personal capacities, having said that I think school name also plays a vital part in the after-school job hunting, for example someone told me buyside companies may favour some students from Booth over let's say Harvard, because of Booth's renowned faculty of Economics and its rigorous curriculum in Economics and Finance. Since I want to apply for the schools of my first choices in the first round which is just one month away, so I need to identify my primary targets now. Thanks
