In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing on the walls.

(A)    due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing
(B)    due to moisture that tourists had exhaled, thereby raising its humidity to such levels that salt from the stone would crystallize
(C)    because tourists were exhaling moisture, which had raised the humidity within them to levels such that salt from the stone would crystallize
(D)    because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high as to make the salt from the stone crystallize
(E)    because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing
OG的解释C,D,E:
C The pronoun them seems to refer to tourists, which is nonsensical; the entire construction is awkward and wordy; would crystallize is not parallel to was growing.
D Once again, them seems to refer to tourists; the entire construction is awkward, wordy, and ambiguous; crystallize is not parallel to was growing.
E Correct. The causal sequence is clear, and them clearly refers to chambers.
我一直都没有弄懂,为嘛D里的them有指代歧义,但是E里的就没有了,这到底是为什么。。。。

21.Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth ofknowledge over the past twenty years about the brainand its development from birth to adulthood, are nowdrawing solid conclusions about how the human brain grows and how babies acquire language.

(A)Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth ofknowledge over the past twenty years aboutthebrain and its development from birth toadulthood, are

(B)Neuroscientists, having amassed a wealth ofknowledge about the brain and its developmentfrom birth to adulthood over the past twentyyears, and are

(C)Neuroscientists amassing a wealth of knowledge about the brain and its development from birthto adulthood over the past twenty years, and are

(D)Neuroscientists have amassed a wealth ofknowledge over the past twenty years about thebrain and its development from birth to adulthood,

(E)Neuroscientists have amassed, over the pasttwenty years, a wealth of knowledge about thebrain and its development from birth to adulthood
OG解释:
A Correct. The explanatory phrase betweenthe subject and predicate is set off bycommas, and the mainclause contains botha subject (Neuroscientists) and acorresponding verb (are now drawing).

B And are indicates that are follows a previousverb, but in fact the sentence has not yetprovided a first main verb for the subjectNeuroscientists; the sentence is thereforeincomplete; over the ... years appears to be modifying adulthood.

C Amassing, like having amassed, functions asan adjective, not a verb; the sentencetherefore lacks thefirst main verb impliedby the compound verb construction and arenow drawing....

D The final descriptor in present tense, nowdrawing conclusions ... does not fit theopening clause, which is in present-perfecttense (have amassed a wealth ...) and seemsto modify adulthood.

E Like D, this sentence attempts to attach apresent-tense descriptor to a present-perfectclause.

(D)    because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them 。。。raising不恰当地修饰了tourists,这个分词修饰语就相当于tourists raisied the humidity within them ,这读起来就像them指代tourists。
E没有修饰歧义,自然也没有指代歧义
(E)    because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing。去掉修饰语是moisture exhaled by tourists  had raised the humidity within them 。tourists本身跟raise这个动词完全无关,所以跟修饰宾语的them没有关系,没有指代错误。

第一个 D选项 because of moisture that....和 moisture (that...) raising...成两个句子了....不是吗?
-- by 会员 beMe (2010/11/18 22:17:16)

两个句子?然后嘞?because of moisture that....我知道这个部分累赘,可是搞不清raising是修饰谁。

第二题
根据未划线部分 知道前面肯定有一个be动词
所以我在A.B.C中选

B.C错就错在移动了over the past twenty years
20年是积累了knowledge 而不是development持续了20年
时间副词随便移动导致修饰错误与原意不符合,所以A正确

不知道大N们怎么看

请问 D raising修饰的是谁?语法上修饰的是tourist?

6.  because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels 这里面的raising 是修饰tourists的 所以them 也就必然错误指代了tourists了
21. og 分词做定语需要和主句时态一致,刘振民语法有讲到。而且D的表述如果是做主句主语的定语,则离修饰词太远,易于造成歧义。E不仅有D的错误,而且表述时间的状语在两个逗号中间也会引起歧义。

为什么会有时态混淆呢~~~~~now drawing不可以理解为一个结果状语么。。。
