看了很多帖，自己集合了一下，希望给需要的同学省点时间。

50. According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come in for a “soft landing”, followed by a gradual increase in business activity.

the gains…… reflect ……and come in……

many 指代analysts

两个that：第一个that修饰confidence，第二个that修饰recession，many had feared，只能是人fear，不能是gain，所以不存在指代问题。因为后面有动作来区分逻辑意思。

The economy will avoid the recession...and in stead (the economy will) come in for a "soft landing,"...

Here, "the economy" is the subjects, "avoid" & "come in for" are the parellel verbs, "the recession" and "a 'soft landing'" are objects.

(A) that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come

问题3：come in for？

答：固定词组“接受、受到、继承”。



B) in the economy to avoid the recession,what many feared earlier in the year, rather to come

如果用what,就要改变语序,例如to avoid what many feared, the recession,...如果不改变语序,what 要改成which

问题1：B项中recession that many的that为什么不能变为what？

答：recession后面的从句是定语从句，定语从句根本就不能用what引导。

b. rather do/rather doing的两个用法，没有rather to do的结构．what实质上引导这个这个从句有点插入语的意思，what有可以跳越修饰的作用，所以，它所指代的对象就不如that明确．

B笨拙企且指代不清拿what指代，不清楚是指代recession还是前面整个句子,unclear;rather to come的主语是谁也不明确,unclear;而且跟A比较B的句子结构明显笨拙,awkward

what many feared earlier in the year, 许多人在年初害怕的事, 人们可以害怕很多东西: danger, unemployment etc. recession 只是其中的一种.

what 做 recession 的同位语, 概念太大, 无法很好的解释recession.



问题2：rather to为什么不行？

答：没有rather to这种说法。只有rather do，rather than。并且，rather一般用在前面有否定词not的情况下，如果有连词应该是but，而不是and。相比之下，前文没有not的情况下，可用instead，并且可说and instead。

d.除了上面讲的rather用法错误以外，它还错在同位语修饰上．recession后面直接加了many were fearing．．．，是一个同位语修饰前面名词．可是这里后面的是个同位语从句，所以必须加上关联词that．

E) that the economy will avoid the recession that was feared earlier this year by many, with it instead coming

（will）come in for a soft-landing 是与will avoid 并列的。而E即使with结构正确，也改变了句子的合理中心，所以错误。

with加独立主格结构





出来 earlier in the year 是 “ 今年早些时候” 的意思

had feared 过去完成时表示过去发生的动作在过去某点为止。仅仅根据earlier in the year 只能判断事件发生在过去。 recession的fear肯定是在confidence之前。同时根据前面的意思知道confidence 是过去已经有的，现在的gains 是进一步反映这个confidence。那么recession的fear自然就是过去的过去，应该用过去完成时了



earlier in the year一般用过去式，在很多例子中都可以看到

但earlier in the year和had feared连用时，很多都用had feared，而不用feared

看起来很奇怪，可是GMAT就是这么用的
