此题的答案解释是如果用more than 就变成是number的比较，不是gyrfalcon的比较了。个人觉得很囧，明明就是gyrfalcon ’ s number的比较嘛！！这样拆开解释我不接受。

我衍生出来的问题还有：
1，greater 和more的区别在哪里。我觉得这里都可以用。
2，为什么than后面不用补that，我觉得number are now和number（that） when这样能够平行。什么情况下才需要补that？

在比较方面，hughlv 的话我有疑惑。

你说：之后后面没有加that，原因是这个句式展开后原句是its numbers are now five times greater than it's numbers were when ... 主谓都相同而且没有歧义，所以省略。比较中是否可省略的最关键依据就是省略是否产生歧义，是的话就不能省。

“是否产生歧义”这个判断标准有点模糊。。。the number of children in this school is greater than that in school B.  我也觉得没有歧义啊，但是that是显然不能够省的，有没有歧义因人而异，这的确是个难搞的问题啊。
能再解释一下吗？

菜鸟理解： 数学方面，大于等于， greater or equal to. 所以在比较数值的时候，用greater。 the numbers是数“值”。 例如： A, the numbers are great than (表示a的数量多，还有更多a）， A, the munbers are more than（还有更多numbers）

numbers和number在这里并没有区别，都表示数量。数字的比较一定是用greater/less而非more/fewer。

   the number of children in this school is greater than that in school B. 数字的比较
   this school has more children than school B has. 群体的比较
