in which & when的疑问~

以前上XDF的时老师讲说   age用in which 修饰   ； time 具体年代用when修饰

但是今天看到OG12里的一道题目 His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine homeland,far outside the range of present-day glaciers,led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the concept of an age in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas.（正确的句子）

OG里面解释说In which or when can be used interchangeably in this sentence.

想知道为什么？ 那以后看句子是不是不能根据in which 和when直接排除了？？

Ron:the emphasis of the sentence is on the fact that the ice sheets ACTUALLY EXISTED during this time. the sentence is not meant to emphasize the persistence of the ice sheets before that age, nor is it meant to suggest that the existence of the ice sheets was a completed action. therefore, the regular past tense is better.

我觉得是因为 不用had done 也可以知道事情发生在led to propose 这个动作之前
所以不需要额外用had done来表示动作发生的顺序了

根据Ron的答复。Peggy说的是对的。 刚刚看懂D选项的 existed in current temperate areas 是说 ice sheet 存在于当前的温带。 跟B答案有本质的区别。 B答案是说： 存在于当前是温带的区域（隐藏含义，之前不是）。 而E ares Now that are temperate    一个是now的位置不对，体会于 areas that are now temperate的区别

我不是NN，只是说一下自己的看法。
过去完成时 是 绝对不能 和 now 同时出现的~
