Hope this is not too late, but below is some thoughts I have on Essay 1 since some CDer have asked me before.
All the best for Jan 7th deadline.
For the question "What Matters Most to You", I think they do want to know what matters most to you. It's not a tricky question, but they probably want to know about your value, your principal, your motivation etc. My interpretation is that they want to know you as a person, someone that is willing to reveal what has guided them throughout their life to where they are now today. Based on that, I don't want to comment on what exactly you should write, because it is personal. Think about what matters most to you, what is your goal for your life, why you have done those things you put on your application (or if there is no other reason than your parents told you to do so, then think about what you want for your life in future).
It is actually the best essay topic I've seen so far (hehe, but given that I've only applied to 2 schools, this is probably not a good claim) , because it does challenge you to dig into yourself and see who you truly is, not what others want you to do.
last thing, no matter what you write, make sure you have laid it out clearly, because it's easy to lose track along the way when you are about to write your entire life.
I don't bother to check it because it surely will be a ding for me.
Congratulations all the same to those who got in.
I saw a topic about Stanford's culture etc. I think it's a fair process. This whole MBA business is a bit crooked, but still fair. Those who win out can make a strong case about themselves, and play the game well.
