Due to和Because of的区别（附OG原题）

复习GMAT以来的第一篇帖子献给小语法点SC重点考察的是逻辑和语意，但是却脱离不了句子结构和成分，毕竟结构承载含意，所以有些逻辑上会造成影响的词也要注意。
做题时遇到表达因果关系的问题，虽然答对，但是心里还是疑惑，所以来论坛搜集整理，并分享给大家。

原文出自gmatclub，先从情境中看它们的用法：
下面是一段对话：
A：.......meeting was canceled due to heavy storm that hit the coast yeasterday.....
B：.......really...but I thought that the meeting was canselled because of that heavy storm...
问题是：这两个词组可以互换吗？
答案是：No. ‘due to’ is used to modify nouns only. ‘Because of’ is used to modify verbs. Thus, these two expressions cannot be used interchangeably.

使用原则：
RULE 1: The expression ‘due to’ can only be used to modify nouns. Thus, you cannot use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause.
RULE 2: ‘Due to’ is correct if the sentence makes sense when you replace ‘due to’ with ’caused by’. If, it does not, then use of ‘due to’ is not correct.
Rule 3: The expression ‘because of’ is used to modify entire clauses. Thus, you can use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause.

注意：这里不是简单的due to后面能加什么不能加什么的问题，而是，due to修饰什么不修饰什么的问题。

The cancellation of parent-teacher meeting was due to heavy rains. – CORRECT
The parent-teacher meeting was canceled because of heavy rains. – CORRECT


In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repairing due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing in the walls.

我觉得第一个due to heavy rains 没什么错啊，而且按照楼主的说法 ...

"due to" in the first sentence modifies "The parent-teacher meeting was canceled" rather than "heavy rains".

今天回看的时候发现了这个帖，我再进一步解释一下

首先要明白什么是修饰，什么可以修饰名词什么可以修饰动词，以及修饰所在的位置如何影响句意，最后要有modifier想修饰的不一定是它在这个位置上能修饰的这个意识，看原句：

...was canceled due to heavy rains中，due to的修饰对象不是heavy rain，是was canceled，想做原因状语，但是due to不能这样用，所以用错
