跪求大神帮忙解释一道题

OG 2018 第784题，官方解释只说 in the six months 要和介词短语 in a similar period 平行，我选了 d
求解释为什么不能加 that 指代 circulation?? 难道不是报纸的circulation在不同时间的比较？

A没有比较对象了吧，前面是circulation in the six months,是一段时间内的情况，后面也应该是在另外一段时间的情况，不能直接和月份比较啊，至少应该是in a similar period  根据前面一个同学说的常见结构， 1）the circulation in X is lower than THAT in Y ;2) have a lower circulation in X than IN Y…这题C是最优的

1.关于比较结构省略，省略的是相同的主谓语                                                                                            2.关于meaning的理解前半句的意思，in the six month（是整个句子的时间状语）把c补全就是Most of the country’s biggest daily newspaper had lower circulation in the six months from October 1995 through March 1996 than （most of the country’s biggest daily newspaper did）in a similar period a year earlier  而反观d选项，in a similar period 是向前修饰that（circulation）相当于是定语而不是后句的时间状语

that 这里只能指代 lower circulation 哦，这样代入句子就不对了。

在前面同学们的基础上，提个简化的思路大家看对不对，that/ those在比较里的指代只能是前述主语，不能指代前述宾语，这个也echo了代词部分优先指代主语的原则。
不知道大家有没有见到反例，求轻拍。
