关于所谓跳跃指代，其实只是一些特殊的情况（比如后面有单数的谓语所以不能修饰复数的对象），没有必要当做一种属性去专门研究总结。

who，whose，which引导的从句需要be placed directly next to the noun it modified. 这是语法要求的，这也是很多时候错误选项中which从句无法指代那些逻辑上正确的对象的原因。

SC中对于noun modifier 的位置并没有很强的约束，所以很多时候是根据Meaning来判断修饰的对象，但是前面说到的从句不同，在SC中是有很强的约束，也是SC中很重要的判断原则之一，这是完全不同的两种概念。

meaning毫无疑问是SC中最重要的判断依据，但是缺少必要的语法点也是无法正确理解句子的意思。

...语法正确的前提是逻辑正确...earth是不能主动发出gather这个动作的，所以ving是不能修饰earth的
只能是修饰前面的navigator
而且即便是从句，也不一定是next to the noun it modifies, 跳跃修饰的情况挺常见的

因为who引导的从句必须next to the noun it modified, 所以gathering只能放在who这个从句的后面，你的问题和理解这题没有关系，因为noun modifier 不是必须next to the noun.

我想是你误解了Manhattan书上的意思。如果按照你的说法，那是不是每个noun都只能有一个modifier了。

首先不要质疑正确答案，要learn from OA

这里gathering 是noun modifier，clearly modify navigators。 noun modifier并不是只能修饰邻近的noun，这里也显然没有什么歧义，earth 不能gather information。

相反，who引导的从句必须紧邻修饰的noun，这也是为什么这里只能把gathering 放在who从句的后面。
