Manhattan第198页有这样一个例子：The houses on Canal Street,of which many had been damaged in the storm,looked abandoned.

书上将其判为错句，解释为，of which many...storm是错误的(The wording is wrong.)
正确的版本应该是：The houses on Canal Street,many of which had been damaged in the storm,looked abandoned.


去查了一下of which类似的用法：He has three brothers, of whom Li Lei is the youngest one.

There are many countries in Asia, of which China is the largest one.

你的例句 of whom 很清楚的表示要修饰的对象是主句的宾语因为whom 是宾格。

而Manhattan错的那例句 of which 修饰不明 可能是houses 也可能是介词短语中的canal street. 所以只有将many 放在of which 前面够成subgroup modifier 的情况下才能清楚的表示实在修饰the houses
