Attending Classes: required or optional? Can students understand the knowledegethoroughly enough in the unversity only by reading books? Or, is there no useof learing from a teacher and dicussing with classmates? As far as I’mconcerned, the answer is definitely “No”, that means all the students aresupposed to abide by the rule of attending classes. In the first place, there is no substituteof teaching if someone plans to master the knowledge and skill. Books areusually written so concisely without detailed further illustration that theteachers complement that part in classes and provide vivid examples toelaborate abstract concept. Moreover, some operations, especially, aredemonatrated only with pictures in the book, making students spend a largeamout of time to acquire by themselves. Quite the opposite, these actions willbe showed specifically by the teacher in the class, so what students need to domay be just to catch a glimpse of them. Appearently, the teachers play apivotal role in the delivery of knowledge and apart from participating classesstudents are hard-pressed to get the chance. What’s more, discussing in a group is anessential part of education in university. Without attending classes, studentslose precise opportunity of debating academic issues with partners and thus theopportunity of sharpening their intellect. When I was learning analogintegrated circuit design in the insititue, one of my partners put forward abizzare structure of current sink. Throughcontinuous discussion and modification, we devised a new circuit with highperformance and published a paper in an international conference. That’s howgroup discusstion works. Therefore attending class can help students fulfillthe potential that might not be achieved otherwise. Nevertheless, some individuls may arguethat it is a waste of time for students with exceptional performance to attendclass. Perhaps this kind of students will not benefit as much as other onesfrom teachers and groups, but actually they can learn more than that, such asthe leadship in the group, the communication skills that is always useful.Additionaly, participating the classes can help students who are lack ofself-control keep pace with others. In light of these situations, attendingclasses is a considerate rule, which can elevate the capabilities of everyone, ratherthan a trade-off among students from diverse backgrounds and with differentablity. Indisreputably, taking part in classes is asensible choice for all the students. Teachers’ illustration and classmates’discussion can enhance students’ learning and elaborate new way of thinking. Ibelieve that going to classes is supposed not to be optional, but anindispensable part of university education.
